The Silicon War Triology

"As a friend and co-worker of Peter Gopal, do you care to respond to the charges of his un-American activities"?

There are only a few times in my life where I can say I really got pissed, but this became one of them. No matter what or who this Gopal was; what just took place yesterday was just bullshit!

As I walked out to my car the morning after Gopal's arrest, Michael Biltzik, a reporter for the LA Times walked up and wanted to interview me.

Now, how many times had my father told me "NEVER TALK WITH A REPORTER"? Moreover, the only correct answer to give them if you have to talk with them is:

Nothing more, nothing less!!!! Well instead, my mom's liberal mouth came out and I said "I don't care if Gopal is a Communist Spy; he's a US citizen and has civil rights. What you are witnessing is people pissing all over them. That my friend is what's un-American! If you really want a story, write about that".

Then with a dramatic pause, I continued "Oh yea, it has already been written about - it was call McCarthyism. Oh, how quickly we forget that this generation of management was well indoctrinated in the program. What's it called? Oh yea... The John Birch Society. And you know what is un-American, to be labeled guilty before innocent. So let me leave you with this question: What Federal laws did he break"?

"But he was caught red handed with national secrets in his position".

"Ah... the yellow journalism comes out in you my friend. Sir, you are what's wrong here. It's not national secrets, its National Silicon's secrets. It's not Communist Spies; it's a breach of contract. Moreover, who the hell said they were National Silicon's secrets in the first place? They could have been Intel's. Remember, I was there during the search. I know what happened!!!"

"You were at the search"?

"You mean all 10 hours of that vigilante search where 100 people contaminated the crime scene"?

Ah, nothing like a telling off a reporter first thing in the morning to make sure that your day was going to hell.

However, as I drove away I should have noticed the plain marked car pull out. See... I hadn't read any of the John L'Clare's books yet.

Yes Dad... I know. I should have read the book you gave me...

"You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything he's no longer in your power -- he's free again."

-- Alexander Solzhenitsyn
